a quote is worth a thousand words

This morning, I stumbled into work, and started the day by checking my email. With gmail, I can see others who use gmail  who are on-line at the same time as me – friends and others.

Logo1Now, it should be noted that I am one of those people who really likes it when someone personalizes their signature with a quote, maybe from some great thinker. A quote that says a little bit about the person whom I am corresponding with. I, myself, love to seek out new quotes for my email signatures. Right now the one that I have on my email signature is this:

tragic that extremists co-opt the notion of God, and that hipsters and
artists reject spirituality out of hand. I don’t have a fixed idea of
God. But I feel that it’s us – the messed-up, the half-crazy, the
burning, the questing – that need God. a lot more than the
goody-two-shoes do." – Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing)

It says a little bit about me, through someone else’s words, shines a little bit of light on who I am or who I hope to be. You may be thinking to yourself why in the heck is she blogging about such a mundane thing? Well, this morning I have seen one of the most offensive (for me) and painful quotes, ever. Not in a signature, but as a IM "slogan or status." Maybe I don’t see the context. My sweetie always says there are two things that are never ever funny: Rape and the Holocaust. I am not sure if my friend was trying to be funny. Maybe not, maybe it comes from a deep well of hurt that I don’t know about. Either way, it has really jarred me this morning. Here it is.

"You wish your dad was there, but more often times he was not / You
can’t put your arms around a dirty gangbang cumshot" -Sarah Silverman

Questions to share in the comments:
Do you use a signature for your email or IM? If so what is it?
What does a signature say to you? What does your signature say about you?
I do not know the background on the quote from Sarah, but it sounds very painful. Tell me how this quote hits you.

  1. My signature:
pacem in terris / mir / shanti / salaam / heiwa
    my name
I think it speaks for itself.
Sarah Silverman isn’t funny to me… she tries to be edgy, but isn’t really any good at it. And I agree that rape and the holocaust are never funny.

  2. and chiming in from the dark & twisted corner…
    my email signature is
“The floggings will continue until morale improves.” –Capt. Bligh
    which also speaks for itself…
but as you know, that’s never slowed me down.
I absolutely understand why a person would not find Sarah Silverman funny.
I myself find her hilarious. If you put a gun to my head, I could not tell you why. Probably for the same reason that I find my signature quote funny, even though I am appalled by torture, and abuse of power, and beatings in general.
I can’t help it. Irony makes me giggle like a kid in church. Irony in church puts me in danger of peeing in the pew. Realizing I’m about to pee in the pew (pee-yew!!) just sends me right over the edge.
You are, of course, right. Neither rape nor the holocaust are ever remotely funny.
But it’s also true that as a thriving, joyful person who survived childhood sexual abuse, I can tell you there were one or two times during my recovery when I laughed myself breathless with a few select fellow-survivors over some totally inappropriate, totally messed-up and bad and wrong-in-every-way jokes. It was not callousness. Nor was it denial. I can’t tell you exactly what it was, except empowering and funny and bonding and liberating. And if anyone else had made those jokes I would have gone ballistic.
Can’t explain it. But it’s been fun rambling about it.

  3. I only recently added an ‘auto signature’ to my email for convenience sake. I just have my first name.
I could never narrow down one quote to use as an ‘auto-signature’ I’m far too fickle for that…but if I HAD to…it would probably be less a quote and more an intro: ‘…it was a dark and stormy night…’

  4. Wow – what a lot of raw pain is in the Sarah S. quote.
I always have a quote. It changes from time to time, but my all-time favorite is: Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away. ~Philip K. Dick

  5. Sarah Silverman is awesome. The quote “You can’t put your arms around a dirty gangbang cumshot” is only a small part of a much longer song. The song is offensive, but it also tells the sad story of how a combination of low self esteem and abuse lead some women to become pornstars. The song also points out how these women wrongly believe there is something glamorous about their lifestyle. In other words, Sarah Silverman is making a valid an important point, even though it may seem like she’s just saying it for shock value. She’s making fun of people who deserve to be made of, because of their actions and bad descisions.

  6. Hey Tom,
Thanks for stopping by the blog. I appreciate your words about Sarah Silverman, and have had some time to actually learn more about her since then. You say
” Sarah Silverman is awesome…She’s making fun of people who deserve to be made of, because of their actions and bad descisions.”
Here is the main problem. While she is couched in humor, the people she is making fun of, well, they don’t deserve it. Let’s just hope you never ever find yourself at the butt of anyones joke, because you have never made a bad decision have you?
Why do hookers and porn stars “deserve” it?
While I appreciate your words, making fun of the sexually abused, marginalized and down-trodden of our world, is just not funny. Ever.
Bless you and those you love.
